Kathmandu – Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Defense, Purna Bahadur Khadka said that national luminary, Bhimsen Thapa, had substantially contributed to protect the nationality and territorial integrity of the country and transform Nepali society to modernism. At a programme organized here today by the National Luminary Bhimsen Thapa Memorial Foundation, Khadka dubbed the late Thapa as a true nationalist and patriotic leader and a source of inspiration.

“It was Thapa who spearheaded exemplary reforms in military, law, social and economic aspects during his tenure”, acting PM Khadka said, adding the task of modernizing the military service was a source of inspiration for the new generation. The package of reforms he initiated was a spectacular contribution left for the country, Khadka appreciated.

“Continuing with the campaign initiated by the ancestors, Thapa in his tenure had expanded the country’s boundary far and wide”, the defense minister explained, adding, “By using his diplomatic skills, Thapa stabilized the country border putting the Sugauli Treaty to effect”. Among other exemplary initiations of Thapa include ending slavery system, fixing ceiling of social festive expenses, introducing measurement system, determining interest rate, managing postal service and building archeologically important structures.

On the occasion, an award carrying a purse of Rs 111, 111 was handed to the National Innovation Centre. At the programme, Foundation chairperson Prof Dr Parthiveswor Prasad Timilsina, Centre’s founder Mahabir Pun and Foundation’s secretary Laxman Thapa, among others had highlighted the contributions of Bhimsen Thapa.
